Centro Vela Alto Lario

HISTORY OF THE CLUB

Il Centro Vela Alto Lario was founded in 1998 and is a merger of the two existing sailing clubs of Gravedona: the AVAL (associazione velica alto Lario founded in 1938) and the CDV (centro diffusione vela founded in 1964).

The main reasons that led to the union of the two sailing clubs was the desire to create a nautical center that organizes sailing events of national and international level, to give a chance to young people who want to approach this wonderful sport offering sailing courses at all levels; with the aim of forming new skilled sailers.

Since our inception in 1998, the enthusiasm of the Board and of the Members was manifested with the organization of the “10th European Championship Hurricane 5.9” which was again repeated two years later.

The organizational ability of the club is consecrated at an European level in 1999-2000 with the arrival on the Upper Lario waters of the circuit “AUDI EUROCUP TOUR” which involved more than 200 competitors of the classes Laser 4000, 5000 and EPS, from the most important sailing clubs in Europe.

The guesthouse, inaugurated in 2000, completes the amenities of the naval base and predisposes the circle to become a Centro Federale F.I.V.. The Euro Master Series from the Laser Standard and Radial classes saw 100 crews from all over Europe give their all to win the title. In 2002 was the debut of the event “Trofeo Zanoletti Match Race di Grado 2 e 3” which saw competing head to head on our regatta fields eight crews specialized in match racing, allowing the organizers to repeat this spectacular sailing discipline in the two subsequent seasons.

In 2003, arrives in Lake Como the event “Coppa PrimaVela – Coppa del Presidente”: the most important national sailing event for cadets and juniors, formalizing the opening ceremonies and awards was the President of the F.I.V. Sergio Gaibisso. The Italian Championship Modelvela 1M opens the 2004 season with the presence of 30 scale models racing front of the circle, giving an unusual and exciting show to the many tourists.

Finally in 2005, after several meetings with European class representatives, we came to the organization of the first National Race, a connection that is then strengthened in the following years arriving in 2008 to host the European Championship Europe Class with 160 crews from 13 different nationalities.

Lake Como is filled with Optimist, for 4 days in the Italian Optimist Team Championship stops off at the club, from all F.I.V. areas the 15 participating teams raced offering beautiful sailing performances.

In September 2007 they’re back contending in Lake Como the “Campionati Italiani delle Classi Olimpiche”, organized by Multilario (Associazione Circoli Velici Lariani), with two regatta fields competing the classes Finn, Laser and RS: X for a total of 150 crews.

The first ten years of the club are at the gate. In 2008, the year of the first decennial of Board of Directors, with the collaboration of many partners, organizes numerous events throughout the season to celebrate this wonderful milestone.

The sailing activity sees the organization of the European Championship Europe Class, the organization and the success of the event are such as to build the basis for the World Championship for 2011, the social activity filled with many events in calendar has dressed up all the nautical headquarters.
